At a time when many begin to doubt peaceful coexistence and human equality, it’s more clear than ever, that we need to change something. We have to put our silent resistance out there, loud and clear, to create a discussion about our political future. And while this is true for everyone, graphic designers in particular have the optimal tools to communicate values and thoughts and to achieve attention.
Therefore I initiated the platform Design Democracy. It is dedicated to the collection and dissemination of relevant posters to obtain basic democratic values and to safeguard mutual respect. For that matter there are further texts and links, which can both designers, as well as regular visitors of the site, use to learn more about each topic.
Design Democracy refers primarily to the political and social awareness within Germany and Europe in the context of democratic values and political diversity, the protection of human rights and mutual respect, the rule of law and pluralism. The goal is to have the posters form a counterpoint to the populist, racist, discriminatory and aggressive contents which are increasingly widespread in the internet. Through social media and with the aid of hashtags, the contributed posters are supposed to reach people who are almost completely isolated. People who think retrospectively and project their own fears on to a stereotype image of the enemy. The posters are aiming to create empathy by simplifying a change of view through visual language, so it gehts the viewer to stop and think. Therefore it also requires a change of perspective within the design process into that addressed viewer. So rather than pulling away from different thoughts Design Democracy proposes to everyone to open their minds so eventually there will be more understanding in our ongoing cultural dialogue.
