Hello, my name is Ravena Hengst and I'm a Communication Designer based in Berlin, Germany.

I’m very accurate in my work and I enjoy creating an all-embracing concept in my work, out of which decisions of design grow. While I originally come from the fields of editorial and graphic design, I also work in web design and illustration as well.

In 2017 I founded the project Design Democracy, an online platform for political posters that are used for counterspeech. With this work my interest in social design was awakened. Since then I have dealt with the creative responsibility towards society and the environment in my work and deal with topics such as e.g. barrier-free design. I talked about the impact and responsibility of design at FYI: 2019, among others.

In 2016 my book Verschwörungstheorie got the Excellent Work/In-Book Award of the TDC Tokyo in the Category »Editorial/Book Design«. It also got on to the Longlist of the competition Prize for Young Book Design of the Stiftung Buchkunst in 2015. My work as a designer has been nominated for the »Newcomer Award« of the German Design Award 2018. Most recently, the book Human Fragments, which I designed together with Corinna Mehl, was selected for the shortlist of the Prize for Young Book Design 2021 of the Stiftung Buchkunst.

In the past and present I have been also working as a freelance designer, among others for Becker Rapp Studio and Bureau Sandra Doeller. Between 2010 and 2016 I studied Communication Design in the Faculty of Design at the Hochschule Darmstadt, majoring in Typography and Graphic Design. In 2013 / 2014 I did an Internship at the New York based Graphic Design Studio MTWTF. From 2018 to 2019 I worked as an exhibition designer at chezweitz, including the traveling exhibition Queer als German Folk and the permanent exhibition History and Stories.

I am always open to assignments and collaborations. Please feel free to get in touch.
