Cards against racism
Illustration, Layout & Graphic Design
For the illustration and design of the postcard set against anti-Black racism, I was commissioned by the BSJ Marburg as part of a “misch mit!” campaign. Our mission was to offer Black people from the city of Marburg and the Marburg-Biedenkopf district a platform on which they could share their experiences with racist exclusion.
Through peer-to-peer interviews, some of the experiences were captured and then recorded in anonymized form on ten unique postcards. Our goal was to sensitize people to the topic of racism. These cards were designed to function alone as well as they serve as a valuable tool in the association's political education work, for example in workshops.
The front of each postcard tells the story of an affected person's experience of discrimination. The back explains why this situation is linked to racism and what effects it can have on those affected. In addition, the cards offer both – those affected and those not affected by racism – recommendations on how they can deal with racism.
The design uses the color black as a background to represent the reality of life and the environment of Black people. The racist exclusions in the texts are highlighted with a white background so that they are immediately noticeable and symbolize the often white sender of such statements. When illustrating, it was important to us not to reproduce the negative experience, but rather to depict the actually positive situation that is only attacked or destroyed by racism. We not only want to tell touching stories with the cards, but also awaken empathy in viewers and contribute to education on the topic of anti-Black racism.
